10:15 – 12:15 Keynote panel discussion: Building Sustainable and Resilient Cities

By 2050, more than two-thirds of humanity will live in cities. Yet cities in the world today are facing major challenges, including overcrowding, water shortages, unreliable electricity distribution, failing transport systems, unemployment, and growing social divides. How can technical innovations help face some of these challenges? What roles do the private sector, civil society, and the knowledge community have in helping to formulate and implement solutions to these challenges? As cities become more “intelligent” and technologically connected, what is the impact on individual liberties and privacy? What role can culture play in promoting social cohesion and creating more resilient cities?

In the next decades, a new era of automation and artificial intelligence will radically transform the world of work. New advances in robotics will impact not only manual work but many professional activities, including in the worlds of research, medicine, and law. What will be the long-term consequences of these transformations on societies? How will they impact education systems and professional training? What pressures on social cohesion and income inequality will these transformations generate? As the struggle for employment intensifies, what solutions can be envisaged? Is the creation of a basic universal income realistic? With the advent of extensive automation and artificial intelligence, what new opportunities for employment and creative activity could emerge?
